Pastoral Care is implicit in much of what we do as a church and inherent in whom we are as Christians. A healthy Christian community is one in which people know that they are loved, visitors are welcomed, and young and old alike are valued and feel safe. The care that we offer, both at times of crisis and in everyday life is an active proclamation of God's love in Christ and for all the world. Caring or befriending at church gatherings and activities, and between Christians, should be seen as a normal activity of every Christian.
When on a more formal or approved basis, however, Pastoral Care undertaken on behalf of a church or the Christian community should be under the authority and supervision of a church leader. Those with a heart-call and appropriate skills and training will be able to provide pastoral care, formally or informally, in the church setting, and also within the Parish or beyond if linked to church members.
What are we aiming to provide?
- To come alongside people to support them through difficult times with acts of friendship and love.
- To respond to people's specific needs.
- To seek God's guidance and discernment so that we can listen, care and support people in need.
- To work as a team with trust and confidentiality, and do not attempt to offer what we cannot honour.
- To be the bridge between those we visit and Jesus and seek to be Jesus to them.
